OK, so the thing you need to know about the Alto Turia Ride is it's a tough event to do from the UK. You get five days superb riding, plus all the background organisation & infrastructure that goes with a major rally, including marshals, medical cover etc. All delivered in a fantastic setting, but you have to get yourself and your gear there. You have to support yourself during the event and then drag your weary bones all the way back to the UK after the fun and excitement is over. These logistics put many riders off, which is a shame, because for the same price as a skiing holiday, you can have some of the best riding of your life.

So what's involved if you want to go independant? You will need to register for the event and hand over your entrance fee via the Spanish internet site. You need to get yourself and your bike from your home, across the channel, through France and down to Valencia. By the time you arrive at the event, you will need to have sorted accommodation, arranged back up support and booked facilities to manage your bike overnight.

To get there, you are talking days of boring, tiring motorway travel (18+ hours motorway driving once you are across the channel!). Expect to have spent £100's on the ferry, vehicle fuel, tolls (1 way across France with a van is over £100) and other travel expenses like overnight stops, food etc. You will have wear and tear on your vehicle, you will need to have sorted European insurance cover, and European breakdown cover. You need to take more time off work and will be away from the family for longer. You will arrive at the event already worn out from all that traveling and of course, you face the joy of doing it all again at the end of the event when your knackered. Remember too you need to navigate and drive long distances when tired on the wrong side of the road - not without risk to you and your vehicle. To top it all, you really need a mate to come along to provide back up support while your off riding each day - fuel, food, fluids, breakdowns etc!
